Does body size and weight matter on what style u play in ping pong?
ok i know that this is kind of stupid but it seems to be nagging at me for quite a time now. ma lin and wang hao are both a little bit short and chubby and they both play penhold. wang liqin and ma long are both kind of tall and skinny and they both play shakehand.(0.0) the even more funny part is that lui guoliang(the current male chinese head coach and former star ping pong player of china) is ALSO chubby, short and PLAYS PENHOLD. now kong linghui(the current female head coach of china also the former star of china) ALSO is tall, skinny and he PLAY SHAKEHAND. i am really wondering if body size and weight have to do with your style because it seems to be following in this trend. short, chubby=penhold, and tall, skinny=shakehand. now this got me thinking if i should switch to shakehand but the funny part is that i like penhold better than shakehand. again this is a very interesting controversy and i hope to hear what u guys want to say.

lolz ivan i totally agree w/ u coz ive also noticed this trend b4 =)
but i disagree w/ ur theory coz all those players started when they were young n ppl change physiques over time so ur theorys probly wrong... =X
btw now u got me wondering if playing penhold makes players short/chubby n playing shakehand makes players tall/skinny? o_O"
p.s. also note that penholds the traditional chinese playing style...
n that shakehands the traditional nonchinese playing style...
that explains a lot since typically chinese players r shorter than nonchinese players =)

i doubt it...penhold needs ma long speed, without RPB blocking can make you run all over the place

Re: Does body size and weight matter on what style u play in ping pong?
penhold playing styles already hav speed...
n shakehand playing styles already hav power...
so all pros gota do is hav power 4 penhold players n speed 4 shakehand players =)

Re: Does body size and weight matter on what style u play in ping pong?
Fun theory to pick at but I doubt it is true. When picking at the fact Wang Liqin is more athletic than Ma Lin, he also has a strong upperbody. Shakehand is suppose to be faster than penhold so I'm guessing his upperbody is the reason to his powerful smashes and loops.
Re: Does body size and weight matter on what style u play in ping pong?
i believe that the taller you are, the more speed you have because its more momentum. For example: In a circle, if there is a radius going around the center like a clock, the point in middle of the radius would be moving slower than the point on the edge of the radius. Also, I do not think body weight matters but the weight of the racket does since force equals mass times acceleration. That's why pros use very heavy blades. Physics is useful =D
Re: Does body size and weight matter on what style u play in ping pong?
You can block with forehand too, but Chinese players are too aggressive to block so you don't see it oftenRaymondWu wrote:i doubt it...penhold needs ma long speed, without RPB blocking can make you run all over the place

rnt shakehand players slower but stronger than penhold players? o_O"
this is coz generally slower atks r stronger n faster atks r weaker... =X
since it takes more time preparing 4 a stronger atk than a weaker atk =)

actually body weight does matter just probly not as much... =X
since u can use it 2 apply weight shift which adds more power but requires more time 2 prepare =)

lolz david they do block w/ their backhands more often =)
Re: Does body size and weight matter on what style u play in ping pong?
penholders don't like relying on their backhand to win the point because you can't loop with it. You often see them leaning to their forehand instead like Ma Lin. That's why his arm looks like a chicken wing when he loops sometimes XD. Wang Hao is a completely different issue though. His style looks half shakehand half penhold since his forehand is completely Chinese yet his backhand resembles a shakehand's. The only problem I see with his style is backhand backspin. He rarely needs to use it because of his unique backhand flick but when I see him do it, he has to switch to traditional backhand or twist his arm awkwardly.
Re: Does body size and weight matter on what style u play in ping pong?
in wangliqn vs ma lin games, wang liqin makes ma lin run all over the court with back hand blocks. penhold players are forced to gao diao most of the time like ma linDavid Xiong wrote:You can block with forehand too, but Chinese players are too aggressive to block so you don't see it oftenRaymondWu wrote:i doubt it...penhold needs ma long speed, without RPB blocking can make you run all over the place

Shakehand attacks are faster than penhold. Penhold has more spin though.

Re: Does body size and weight matter on what style u play in ping pong?
its coz shakehand styles giv more power than penhold styles =)
n yes i agree w/ andy that penhold styles giv more spin coz of more wrist =)

lolz so thats y he has the most power compared 2 other chinese players =)
also its coz of his shakehand style since it givs players more power 2 =)

yea n sumhow it has way more backspin compared 2 traditional penhold backhand... =X
im guessing it defntly has sumthing 2 do w/ more wrist power since its rpb =)

He has a lot of muscle weight as to fat weight.
Re: Does body size and weight matter on what style u play in ping pong?
i agree w/ u andy =)
but muscle weight is still fat weight rite? o_O"
since 100lbs of muscle weight still equals 100lbs of fat weight =P

Muscle is more packed allowing for faster, quicker movement.iJacky wrote:i agree w/ u andy =)

Fat sags your body slowing you down = slower movement = slower smash = slower ball.

yea i agree w/ ur logical statement =)
it reminds me of this giant dude in hb whose got a fat belly...
n altho hes got so much power in his shots his speed aka reaction/recovery time is kinda slow =)
Re: Does body size and weight matter on what style u play in ping pong?
i wouldn't really consider wang hao and ma lin to be chubby or short.. liu guo liang is probably chubby now but he's retired. and when he did play he was short and skinny, not chubby
besides wang liqin, all the other chinese shakehanders aren't that tall
xu xin's going to be the next wang hao and he's "tall and skinny" so yeah.
